Urban Decay Jean-Michel Basquiat Collection
The new Urban Decay Basquiat collection is gorgeous! It’s inspired by the iconic graffiti artist himself, and if you haven’t seen the packaging yet, it’s really unique. I wasn’t familiar with Jean-Michel Basquiat before viewing this collection, but after learning that his art was hugely popular in New York in the ’80s, I get why Urban Decay wanted to collaborate with his estate. It has that edgy, urban flair that Wende Zomnir, the founder of UD, loves so much. Basquiat is described as an artistic outsider who challenged the status quo and spoke out against social injustice. Each palette has a small cutout on the back for hanging so you can display the palette on your wall and create your own mini Basquiat gallery.
My Beauty Bunny received the Urban Decay x Basquiat vault to review. I am going to share my thoughts (and swatches of) the Gallery Blush Palette and the Gold Griot Eyeshadow Palette. Emily will review the Tenant Eyeshadow Palette, lipsticks and eye pencils in a separate post.
The UD Jean-Michel Basquiat Gallery Blush Palette ($34) is a quad with four shades. The outer and interior packaging is covered in canvas with Basquiat’s insignia in die-cut plastic at the opening. Two of these shades are what I would consider blushes, one highlighter and one bronzer. X-Rated and NoHo are both cool pink tones. X-Rated is the softer and brighter of the two. NoHo is more of a deep berry shade. Now’s The Time is a gold champagne shimmer. Jawbone is a medium bronze color.
As you can see, the colors are fairly pigmented without becoming too harsh. I think this palette is best for those with medium skintones. But, if they use a lighter or heavier hand, lighter and darker gals can get a gorgeous glow with these as well. The blushes are in the cool pink range (as most of UD’s colors tend to be), but the highlight and bronzer are in the neutral to slightly warm category.
The Urban Decay Jean-Michel Basquiat Gold Griot Eyeshadow Palette ($39) has some of the coolest artwork from the collection. The canvas-covered palette has eight shades, most of which are in the cool neutral category.
- Enigma (neutral pale nude matte)
- Levitation (warm pale nude matte)
- Not For Sale (medium sienna matte)
- Suckerpunch (warm brown shimmer)
- Influence (brown satin w/gold shimmer)
- BK (gray matte-satin)
- Pseudonym (deep navy matte)
- Crown (very metallic gold) – this one has a green cast in the palette, but swatches gold on my skin
Since I have warm undertones, and naturally gravitate toward warmer earth tones, I will get the most use out of Levitation, Not For Sale and Influence. Enigma also makes a nice under-brow highlight. The other shades will not get much use from me, but I think they’d be really gorgeous on blondes and others with cooler-toned skin. The brush that comes with this palette is also worth a mention. If you’re a makeup pro, you probably have better brushes in your collection, but this dual-ended, synthetic brush is actually pretty decent for a palette brush!
